Vooruitgang of nieuwigheid?

"So if the future is possible today, why is it still the future?"

Om DJ Shadow te citeren: "It's the money." En de gebrekkige samenwerking tussen apparaten. Aldus Christian Cantrell in 'The future is disappearing: How humanity is falling short of its grand technological promise' (Salon.com). Hij maakt ook een belangrijk onderscheid tussen vooruitgang en nieuwigheid:

Progress is about increasing access to information and media as opposed to imposing artificial restrictions and draconian policies; it’s about empowering the world to do more than just shop more conveniently, or inadvertently disclose more highly targetable bits of personal information; it’s about trusting your customers to do the right thing, providing real and tangible value, and holding yourself accountable by giving all the stakeholders in your business the ability to walk away at any moment. And it’s about sometimes taking on a challenge not only for the promise of financial reward, but simply to see if it can be done, or because you happen to be in a unique position to do so, or because humanity will be the richer for it.

De toekomst in 1981

World of Tomorrow: School, Work and Play (1981) van Neil Ardley. Mooi voorbeeld van de manier waarop ideeën over de toekomst soms uitkomen (de elektronische bibliotheek, online shoppen, computer criminaliteit) maar de esthetiek uiteindelijk volstrekt anders is. Sonic Boom x Lad Musician

Sonic Boom verzorgt de muziek bij de modeshow van het Japanse Lad Musician kledingmerk dat de collectie grotendeels heeft geïnspireerd op Spacemen 3. Een paar van die witte outfits tegen het einde zou ik zo dragen. Briljante totaalervaring in ieder geval (met Steve Hillage als intro!).

Nieuwe William Gibson in aantocht

I think if someone had somehow had a dream in which they had seen our smartphone technology as it is today in the 1950s, and they’d written a science fiction story, I doubt they would have been able to publish it. It would be so hard to tell a story while you’re simultaneously describing this thing that these people do with these weird little pocket television sets they all have.

 Sinds Pattern Recognition niet zo enthousiast geweest over een nieuwe Gibson als The Peripheral. Motherboard heeft een leuk interview met veel aandacht voor geschiedenis. Ergens toch wel jammer dat hij dat hoofdstuk waar hij in het citaat naar verwijst niet heeft doorgezet.

Volgende deel gaat over een van mijn favoriete albums. Ik merk tijdens onderzoek dat het op vreemde manier altijd is ondergeanalyseerd. Heel weinig de muziek zelf, altijd de invloed die het heeft gehad. Dus draai ik het meteen radicaal om.

Afkicken van groei

Despite decades of extraordinary technological advancement and huge efficiency improvements, the energy and resource demands of the global economy are still increasing. This is because within a growth-orientated economy, efficiency gains tend to be reinvested in more consumption and more growth, rather than in reducing impact.

This is the defining, critical flaw in growth economics: the false assumption that all economies across the globe can continue growing while radically reducing environmental impact to a sustainable level. The extent of decoupling required is simply too great. As we try unsuccessfully to “green” capitalism, we see the face of Gaia vanishing.

The very lifestyles that were once considered the definition of success are now proving to be our greatest failure. Attempting to universalise affluence would be catastrophic. There is absolutely no way that today’s 7.2 billion people could live the Western way of life, let alone the 11 billion expected in the future. Genuine progress now lies beyond growth. Tinkering around the edges of capitalism will not cut it.

Uit een helder artikel dat een structureel sociaal-economisch probleem aanwijst. En een aantal voorzichtige oplossingen aandraagt. Met een titel die niet onrealistisch is. De ommekeer is lastig en complex maar hoeft zeker niet vervelend te zijn. Maar mijn nieuwe ding is: er hoort een levensstijl bij, een set waarden, praktijken, culturele uitingen die verandering verankeren...en gewoonweg cool maken.
