Hippie modernisme

Helaas ben ik voorlopig niet in de buurt van Minneapolis, want de tentoonstelling Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia in het Walker Art Center klinkt precies als mijn ding. Fast Company heeft een interessant interview met de curator Andrew Blauvelt waarin een aantal De Toekomst Hervonden riffs terugkeren.

What I argue is that there are functional through-lines. Almost every significant and different thing that I can think of today is somehow tied back to this period. The conservative values of the 1970s and 1980s rewrote the 1960s as a kind of failure, but it depends on when you want to decide failure happens. If you examine this historic moment today, it seems like less of a failure. A lot of the concepts and ideas have in fact changed the way we think about things.

Wordt ook een mooi proto-Solar Punk project aangehaald. Maar ergens geeft het voorbeeld dat hij aanhaalt - Info Gonks van Archigram als voorloper van Google Glass - heel precies het verschil tussen beide tijdperken aan.

Nieuwe variëteiten van Afrofuturism

Strong stories or visions of the future stick around. The 1920s sci-fi fantasy of a jetpack commute still pops up in discussions about the future of technology, not to mention as an option on the Citymapper travel app. By co-opting or creating new visions of the future, it seems possible to influence the development of new products and services - from consumer tech to urban infrastructure. A new generation of African artists is taking over the mantle of Afrofuturist arts from a US-centred crowd. They could bring a welcome change to how technology is developed in the region, as well as a challenge to the dominance of imported plans for urban development.

Zo begint het artikel 'Afrofuturism to everyday futurists: new kinds of artists, power & tech' van Jessica Bland, dat in eerste instantie een overzicht lijkt van nieuwe sciencefiction uit Afrika, maar veel meer is dan dat. De tekst is volgestopt met interessante links naar essays, boeken en lezingen die je verder aan het denken zetten over veranderingen die niet eens opvallen (collective unglamorous). Bijvoorbeeld nooit geweten dat de iPad zo geïnspireerd was door The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (al was het idee mooier en vriendelijker dan de realiteit van het object zoals het uiteindelijk is geïnjecteerd met dat typische Californische neofascisme.)

 

De Anti-Minority Report

Ik heb eindelijk Her van Spike Jonze gezien. Fascinerende film, op diverse niveaus. Dit artikel in Wired gaat dieper in op de design beslissingen van de makers:

Jonze had help in finding the contours of this slight future, including conversations with designers from New York-based studio Sagmeister & Walsh and an early meeting with Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, principals at architecture firm DS+R. As the film’s production designer, Barrett was responsible for making it a reality. Throughout that process, he drew inspiration from one of his favorite books, a visual compendium of futuristic predictions from various points in history. Basically, the book reminded Barrett what not to do. “It shows a lot of things and it makes you laugh instantly, because you say, ‘those things never came to pass!’” he explains. “But often times, it’s just because they over-thought it. The future is much simpler than you think.”

Sciencefiction als laboratorium

Microsoft, Google, Apple and other firms have sponsored lecture series in which science fiction writers give talks to employees and then meet privately with developers and research departments. Perhaps nothing better demonstrates the close tie between science fiction and technology today than what is called “design fiction”—imaginative works commissioned by tech companies to model new ideas. Some corporations hire authors to create what-if stories about potentially marketable products.

Een fijn overzichtsartikel over de hedendaagse rol van sciencefiction met veel interessante uitspraken van bijna alle grote levende schrijvers. Die Hieroglyph: Stories and Blueprints for a Better Future bundel die later dit jaar uitkomt moet in de gaten worden gehouden.

Voorbereidingen op de toekomst

Uit 1968. De titel is al fascinerend. Sterkt mij in mijn voornemen om weer regelmatig tweedehands boekwinkels te bezoeken, hoe eenvoudig dat ook is om vanachter je computer te doen. Gewoon om te kijken wat je onverwacht tegenkomt.

Echte auto's

Niet mijn specialiteit, meer een onderwerp dat de liefhebber van design en futurisme af en toe oppikt: de wilde prototypes die autofabrikanten in de jaren '60-'70 bouwden. Dat wordt nog steeds gedaan, ook met het oog voor speciale optredens in games, maar het mist toch een bepaalde technoromantiek (de onschuld van de auto is natuurlijk totdat de laatste druppel benzine is vergoten allang verloren).
