Over Interstellar

Gisteren naar Interstellar geweest. De film is goed genoeg voor een artikel over zijn plaats in sciencefiction en de vraag of het de interesse in de ruimtevaart weer kan doen herleven. 'Een stoffige wereld, een oude droom' vind je op MyJour. 

Over de film zelf: goed gemaakt maar uiteindelijk geen klassieker (hij is te lang en de hoofdpersoon maakt echt teveel mee. Als ruimtereizen iets zullen zijn is het wel saai.) Maar wel een ouderwetse bioscoopervaring waarbij je bij terugkeer op straat even moet adapteren.

En een handig overzicht dat online de ronde doet (heel onoverzichtelijk wordt het niet):

Eerst, nieuws over het eerste synthetische (semi-synthetisch als ik het goed begrijp) blad dat volledige fotosynthese reproduceert:

 

Als dat niet genoeg is om verschillende toekomstscenario's te laten opbloeien is microgolf aandrijving voor de derde keer geverifieerd (let ook op onderhuidse "Chinezen nooit te vertrouwen" sfeer).

British scientist Roger Shawyer has been trying to interest people in his EmDrive for some years through his company SPR Ltd. Shawyer claims the EmDrive converts electric power into thrust, without the need for any propellant by bouncing microwaves around in a closed container. He has built a number of demonstration systems, but critics reject his relativity-based theory and insist that, according to the law of conservation of momentum, it cannot work. 

 Volgens Wired heeft NASA zijn eigen tests gedaan waarna de poëzie van geesten en anti-deeltjes weer opduikt:

"Test results indicate that the RF resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma."

This last line implies that the drive may work by pushing against the ghostly cloud of particles and anti-particles that are constantly popping into being and disappearing again in empty space.

Verkenners

Prachtige illustratie die de hedendaagse missies in ons zonnestelsel overzichtelijk in kaart brengen. Onderin een lijst aan toevoegingen in de nabije toekomst. Het is misschien niet heel druk maar op deze manier wordt duidelijk dat men niet compleet stilstaat. (via Astronomy Picture of the Day)

Terug naar de kosmos?

Dit is goed nieuws:

“In the 21st century, Russia should preserve its status of the leading space power. Therefore, the development of our space capabilities is set to be the top priority of state policy. Our attention to this industry will be increasing,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said. Putin said that by 2020, the Russian government is planning to allocate some 1.6 trillion rubles (about $52 billion) to the national space industry.

Waarom? Omdat een serieuze kans op de verkenning van de ruimte een radicale verlegging van de collectieve blik vergt. Wat exact eerst komt weet ik niet, maar het helpt als een deel van de economie zich verplaatst richting de ruimtevaart (in plaats van, oh ik weet niet, rotzooi als drones, straaljagers, clusterbommen etc.) Putin is natuurlijk fouter-dan-fout maar deze stap is noodzakelijk om de Amerikanen eens wakker te schudden. Die kunnen het toch niet hebben dat ze ergens minder succesvol in zijn en zo heb je binnen de kortste keer een nieuwe Race naar de Ruimte. Ongetwijfeld in de eerste plaats met het oog op grondstoffen, militaire onzin en nationale eer maar dat maakt uiteindelijk niet uit. Het gaat om een omslag van een cultuur naar buiten toe...ambitie...dromen.
