Richtung 2000: Vorschau auf die Welt von morgen (1972)

Ah, de toekomst in 1972. Zoals uitgezonden door ZDF. Moderne architectuur. Synthesizers. Kant-en-klaar ontbijt. Proto-Smarts.

At the same time, one can perceive, faintly, an even deeper, more glacial political stasis underneath the frenzy of the present. Rosa calls this the “frenetic standstill,” the Boethian “nunc stans” in which one has no time, but in which an eternal, unchanging sameness afflicts the age, and the only salvation one can hope for is environmental catastrophe. For the feeling of the present moment, the movie Speed furnishes an incomparable allegory: if we lift our foot off the gas, death comes instantly.

Uit Too Fast, Too Furious: In Search of Time Gained, een elegant een veelzijdig essay in Throwback.

Mooi label toch:

Ursula Le Guin wijst de weg

"We will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now and can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine some real grounds for hope."

Handboek voor verandering

Uit de introductie van Ideas for Change:

This resource will help you successfully challenge power and authority.

Whether it’s local officials trampling on your rights or a national government destroying our dwindling freedoms, there is always a need – and a right – to confront power. Intrusive bureaucrats, bullying corporations and intemperate lawmakers all need to be reminded that authority requires respect for dignity and rights. Empowered citizens help ensure that this reminder is never far away from their consciousness.
Sometimes we can influence change in a gentle and conventional way, but there are times when the only message is one that’s more relentless and even disruptive. That’s often the way the world is changed for the better. We’ll explore all possible options throughout this text.

In short, this booklet is an activist’s armoury. It brings together the wisdom of hundreds of campaigners throughout the centuries to provide a strategic shop front that lays out campaigning techniques from gentle moral persuasion, to breathtakingly potent non-aggressive power strategies.

Favoriete albums 2014 inclusief mix

Ruimte, bliepjes, gevoel.

Aphex Twin – Syro

GusGus – Mexico

Scott Walker + Sunn o))) – Soused

Caustic Window – Caustic Window

Swans – To Be Kind
Niet alles is even goed.

The Soft Pink Truth – Why Do the Heathen Rage?
Toch is Why Do the Heathen Rage? een zeer onverwachte stap.

Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

Ariel Pink – Pom Pom

“What I find curious about that,” he says, “is that it suggests that what we, or I, most like about cities is what happens when they’re partially broken. Friends my age in New York have ferocious nostalgia for the city of the late Seventies, which was in some ways a dreadful place for many of its residents. When I returned to London as an adult in the early Eighties, it was wonderful, but it didn’t seem to be functioning up to par in terms of what one would have imagined its engineers and social designers had intended. But people were living vividly and very interestingly amid the bits that worked and there were all those things that happened in cities when there’s available interstitial space; funny, impossible little retail operations that were completely charming and interesting.” He pauses. “For a city to become completely functional and completely successful economically seems to kill all of that, and I can’t really see the way out of that as a paradox.”

Grote Werken: Tropical Islands

The hangar at Brand-Briesen, known as the Aerium, is one of the world's largest buildings: The only larger buildings are the Boeing Everett works, the Airbus A380 super-jumbo assembly hall, and a Target distribution warehouse in Washington state. (It's 360 metres long and over 100 metres high: so large you could fit a Nimitz class super-carrier inside it.) It was a suitably ambitious plant for what was essentially a plan to build an aircraft with a cargo capacity even greater than the Antonov An-225 Mriya, with vertical take-off and landing thrown in as a bonus. And so, when CargoLifter AG went bankrupt in 2004, having completed the hangar, it should be no surprise that someone, somewhere, sat up and said to themselves, "hey, we could use that!"

Over Interstellar

Germany's whole power supply -- and the way it's managed -- looks very different than it did not so long ago. In contrast to the big, centralized power plants that could meet demand with roughly the same, regular supply day-in and day-out, the new German system is increasingly a dynamic, decentralized patchwork that includes more than two million small and medium-scale renewables producers -- businesses, villages and towns, co-ops, individuals, green investment funds, and farmers -- whose numbers grow by the month.

You invented the term “cyberspace” back when Ronald Reagan was president — before Neuromancer came out in 1984, even before Steve Jobs unveiled the Mac. Yet you typically spend a lot of time in interviews discounting your own predictive capacity. Why?

Well for me, all of this is a way to get a handle on the present, the present having become extremely fantastic. And from the point of view of someone back when I wrote Neuromancer, the most fantastic thing about the present time is that we’re actually still here. In the early ’80s, people who knew what their situation was with the Cold War and nuclear armament didn’t necessarily expect that we’d make it this far. We’ve kind of lost that knowledge. Once the threat was gone, it was like we disremembered it as a species. It seldom comes up anymore, which is really odd.
When I wrote Neuromancer, any scenario that wasn’t nuclear Armageddon was inherently optimistic. It was an act of optimism in the early 80s to set us up in a future science fiction story in a world in which there hadn’t been nuclear war.

Vooruitgang of nieuwigheid?

"So if the future is possible today, why is it still the future?"

Om DJ Shadow te citeren: "It's the money." En de gebrekkige samenwerking tussen apparaten. Aldus Christian Cantrell in 'The future is disappearing: How humanity is falling short of its grand technological promise' (Salon.com).

Progress is about increasing access to information and media as opposed to imposing artificial restrictions and draconian policies; it’s about empowering the world to do more than just shop more conveniently, or inadvertently disclose more highly targetable bits of personal information; it’s about trusting your customers to do the right thing, providing real and tangible value, and holding yourself accountable by giving all the stakeholders in your business the ability to walk away at any moment. And it’s about sometimes taking on a challenge not only for the promise of financial reward, but simply to see if it can be done, or because you happen to be in a unique position to do so, or because humanity will be the richer for it.

De toekomst in 1981

World of Tomorrow: School, Work and Play (1981) van Neil Ardley.

Sonic Boom x Lad Musician

Nieuwe William Gibson in aantocht

It was impossible to tell the story because the technology was so weird.

I think if someone had somehow had a dream in which they had seen our smartphone technology as it is today in the 1950s, and they’d written a science fiction story, I doubt they would have been able to publish it. It would be so hard to tell a story while you’re simultaneously describing this thing that these people do with these weird little pocket television sets they all have.

Tien albumkritieken, nieuw overzicht

Tien albumkritieken alweer, dus even een nieuw overzicht.

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Blondie - Eat to the Beat
Talk Talk - Colour of Spring
Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire
Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche '85
Plastikman - Ex
Serge Gainsbourg - L'homme à tête de chou
Stereolab - Mars Audiac Quintet
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish

Despite decades of extraordinary technological advancement and huge efficiency improvements, the energy and resource demands of the global economy are still increasing. This is because within a growth-orientated economy, efficiency gains tend to be reinvested in more consumption and more growth, rather than in reducing impact.
This is the defining, critical flaw in growth economics: the false assumption that all economies across the globe can continue growing while radically reducing environmental impact to a sustainable level. The extent of decoupling required is simply too great. As we try unsuccessfully to “green” capitalism, we see the face of Gaia vanishing.
The very lifestyles that were once considered the definition of success are now proving to be our greatest failure. Attempting to universalise affluence would be catastrophic. There is absolutely no way that today’s 7.2 billion people could live the Western way of life, let alone the 11 billion expected in the future. Genuine progress now lies beyond growth. Tinkering around the edges of capitalism will not cut it.

Nieuw artikel Metropolis M over technopaganisme

Brumes d'automne (Plastikman re-score)

Richie Hawtin is goed bezig.

A surprising number of conversations with experts in human extinction end like this: with great hope. You’d think that contemplating robot extermination would make you gloomy, but it’s just the opposite. As Rees explains, “What science does is makes one aware of the marvelous potential of life ahead. And being aware of that, one is more concerned that it should not be foreclosed by screwing up during this century.” Concern over humanity’s extermination at the hands of nanobots or computers, it turns out, often conceals optimism of the kind you just don’t find in liberal arts majors. It implies a belief in a common human destiny and the transformative power of technology.

donderdag 2 oktober 2014

Twee interessante toekomstscenario's

Putting these and other elements together–hi-tech, distributed communications, distributed energy and manufacturing, local sustainable food systems, appropriate technology and tactical urbanism among others–sets the stage for a future that looks quite a bit different than the present one. One might describe it as a kind of postmodern pastiche that looks neither like the antiquated futurisms we once imagined nor an idyllic return to preindustrial peasant society.
It’s a future that by current middle-class measures might look impoverished, but by other metrics is healthier, more resilient, more nourishing and more abundant in the ways that really matter.

AFX/Polygon Window recensie 1993

"This makes Aphex music sound cold and forbidding, when it actually glistens and glows with "soul". In fact, it's 21st Century gospel, a glimpse of cyberdelic heaven. It's sacred music for a secular age, synth-siphoned balm for the wounded soul, and the (il)logical sequel to both Eno/Bowie's "Low" and Spacemen 3's "Playing With Fire."

Legacy acts

Electronic music is entering into its golden years (after all, the Moog is 50). It's finally getting comfortable in its own skin. So, what of the future, then? If it is indeed boring, can't something be both boring and great? Any lasting relationship, for example, is comprised of lots of indistinguishable days. Even exciting can get boring. Boredom is a sign of durability. And I'd rather have a durable future than no future at all.

Pitchfork: In the '90s, your music existed in a kind of dialectical relationship with rave culture. Do you miss that?

RDJ: Yeah, I do, actually. For years, I could listen to jungle and nick things from them, but they didn't know I existed. It was a separate world. But that world doesn't exist any more. It's all merged into this global Internet world. It's a real shame. I really don't like that. But that's just globalization. It's got good sides as well. But scenes aren't allowed to develop on their own any more. Everyone knows about everything.

The holy grail for a music fan, I think, is to hear music from another planet, which has not been influenced by us whatsoever. Or, even better, from lots of different planets. And the closest we got to that was before the Internet, when people didn't know of each other's existence. Now, that doesn't really happen.

I used to love jungle. I still think it's the ultimate genre, because the people making it weren't musicians. The best artists are people who don't consider themselves artists, and the people who do are usually the most pretentious and annoying. [laughs] They've got their priorities wrong. They're just doing it to be artists rather than because they want to do it. And a lot of jungle people were actually car mechanics and painter-and-decorator types, like, pretty hardcore blokes. I wouldn't want to get into a fight with them. I know a few people who were like that, and I don't think that really exists any more. Maybe those sort of non-musician types do some dubstep stuff, or grime. But it didn't exist in jungle for long. There was only a couple of years where people didn't know what they were doing, and you got all these samples that are just totally not related in pitch. I really hunt down those records. They've got this ridiculous mishmash of things that totally don't go with each other at all. Obviously, after they've done it for a couple of years they learn how to make chords and stuff, and it's not so interesting now.

Leeslijst lezing DordtYart

Grace Jones - Nightclubbing
Donald Fagen - The Nightfly
Blondie - Eat to the Beat
Talk Talk - Colour of Spring
Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire
Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche '85

What the music papers I grew up on offered was a concentrated, all-enveloping experience that allowed you to escape from your real surroundings, with all their dreary limitations, and achieve vicarious access to the place where all the action was happening and all the ideas were percolating. Concentration of a different kind was involved in reading the frequently very long features. It’s perfectly possible, of course, to flick desultorily through a printed magazine in just the same way one drifts shiftlessly across the infosphere. But something about the bound nature of the magazine encourages getting pulled into a story, and staying with it until the end.

Aankondiging lezing DordtYart

The idea that robots could make employment itself optional may sound fantastic. No more work! But the end result could be more, not less angst. We’d still have to find our place among the robots, except this time without work as a guidepost for defining a sense of purpose. By eliminating the need for people to work, robots would free us up to focus on what really makes us human. The scariest possibility of all is that only then do we figure out what really makes us human is work.

British scientist Roger Shawyer has been trying to interest people in his EmDrive for some years through his company SPR Ltd. Shawyer claims the EmDrive converts electric power into thrust, without the need for any propellant by bouncing microwaves around in a closed container. He has built a number of demonstration systems, but critics reject his relativity-based theory and insist that, according to the law of conservation of momentum, it cannot work.

"Test results indicate that the RF resonant cavity thruster design, which is unique as an electric propulsion device, is producing a force that is not attributable to any classical electromagnetic phenomenon and therefore is potentially demonstrating an interaction with the quantum vacuum virtual plasma."

This last line implies that the drive may work by pushing against the ghostly cloud of particles and anti-particles that are constantly popping into being and disappearing again in empty space.

Systemen om verandering tegen te gaan

Throughout the western world new systems have risen up whose job is to constantly record and monitor the present - and then compare that to the recorded past. The aim is to discover patterns, coincidences and correlations, and from that find ways of stopping change. Keeping things the same.
We can't properly see what is happening because these systems are operating in very different areas - from consumerism, to the management of your own body, to predicting future crimes, and even trying to stabilise the global financial system - as well as in politics.
But taken together the cumulative effect is that of a giant refrigerator that freezes us, and those who govern us, into a state of immobility, perpetually repeating the past and terrified of change and the future.

Te belangrijk om te verzuipen in de Twitter-stroom, De laatste media-archeologie van Adam Curtis: Now Then. "Sometimes paranoia's just having all the facts." van William Burroughs schoot me tijdens het lezen weer eens te binnen.

Futuristisch bier

In the future, I can imagine artificial intelligences taking on the role of delegates. The AI will learn your political preferences and priorities, and accordingly vote on your behalf. The trick to delegative democracy, of course, is ensuring that votes aren't passed on to a delegate through coercion, bribes, or other trickery.

The shows were much more exclusive and even the shows in New York were not as much about celebrity. Really it was just the editors that went. There was no street style. Particularly in Europe, just editors went to shows. The funny thing was, Paris was pretty irrelevant and Milan was pretty major because Prada, Gucci and Versace were there. That was where the news came from. Saint Laurent was still at YSL and that's was like completely moribund. Chanel was important. The models were more women, there were still girls working like the Carolyn Murphys, but it wasn't the very young girls who were like 14 and 16. Overall, the shows just had a lot more spectacle. I mean Gianni Versace died in 97. Versace was super important. Gucci was super important. That's where all the trends were coming from and it was around the time that New York had just started to be at the beginning of the season— historically it had been at the end of the season until Calvin Klein changed it. Helmut Lang was a really important collection and that showed in New York. But a lot of the Parisian houses that we all think of as super iconic had not been renewed or rebooted yet—no Givenchy, no Lanvin—in the way we think of it now.

Overal Alphaville

Imagine the scenario many years along: streets and streets of vacant properties and offices, because there’s simply no one left who can afford the rents that can make renting worthwhile for landlords. And even though high prices have encouraged large volumes of new supply to be created by developers these have ended up mostly in the hands of wealth-preservationists, going straight into dark inventory stores.

The capital city retains value only as a retail showroom, a cultural tourist spot and/or an arts and social hub for visitors or legacy occupants. But it has all the same been significantly dehumanised because almost no-one can afford to work there. The workers have either been replaced by robots and technology, or forced (unwittingly) into servitude to a faceless overseer who grants them permission to live rent free. Yes, yes.. think Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville.

Meanwhile, inevitably, the outskirt flourished as people from the city relocated to more affordable rural or regional parts of the country. This was facilitated by the internet which increasingly enabled people to work from wherever they choose.

The speed-up of information gathering and publishing naturally created new form of arranging material for readers. As early as 1830 the French poet Lamartine had said. "The book arrives too late," drawing attention to the fact that the book and the newspaper are quite different forms. Slow down typesetting and news-gathering, and there occurs a change, not only in the physical appearance of the press, but also in the prose style of those writing for it. The first great change in style came early in the eighteenth century, when the famous Tatler and Spectator of Addison and Steele discovered a new prose technique to match the form of the printed word. It was the technique of equitone. It consisted in maintaining a single level of tone and attitude to the reader throughout the entire composition. By this discovery Addison and Steele brought written discourse into line with the printed word and away from the variety of pitch and tone of the spoken, and even the hand-written, word. This way of bringing language into line with print must be clearly understood. The telegraph broke language away again from the printed word, and began to make erratic noises called headlines, journalese, and telegraphesephenomena that still dismay the literary community with its mannerisms of supercilious equitone that mime typographic uniformity.
