Een uitstekende introductie van solarpunk

For a great many reasons (not least of which is the aging population), I don’t think we can count on mass movements taking to the streets to fix our problems. Instead we can build our solarpunk society in the places and moments that the state neglects — particularly in response to the climate disasters and black swan shocks that will punctuate the coming century. If we do this right, Solarpunk could be the philosophy of those who fill in the gaps, the aesthetic of the assemblies that coalesce where government fails to show up.

'On the Political Dimensions of Solarpunk' van Andrew Dana Hudson is het beste essay over solarpunk dat ik tot nu toe heb gelezen. Uitgebreid, subtiel en met de juiste toon, ergens tussen hoop en realisme in. Het is denk ik ook de bron van de 'move quietly and plant things' slogan. Het is in ieder geval een essentiële tekst voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is een praktisch futurisme dat zich bewust is van zowel esthetische als socio-economische dimensies.

Dat het solarpunk idee, op een haast instinctieve manier, zo goed voelt heeft mij een tijd verbaast. Maar na lezing van 'On the Political Dimensions of Solarpunk', met zijn gebruik van onder andere Sterlings "old people in big cities afraid of the sky" en Gibsons 'Jackpot', ben ik De Toekomst Hervonden gaan zien als een soort voorbereiding van solarpunk, het noodzakelijke sloopwerk van ruïnes. Aangezien de term toen ik het boek schreef nog niet bestond, vind je het er niet terug. Anders had ik het zonder twijfel in de conclusie gebruikt. Hoe dan ook, tijd om explicieter te worden over solarpunk in een groter werk (twijfel alleen of het fictie of non-fictie zal zijn.) Ondertussen laat ik in recente teksten hints achter: de DordtYart lezing, de laatste zin in 'Een klein futurisme' vanzelfsprekend, maar ook het einde van het Countrywear essay in From Tip to Toe met het visioen van tuinsteden. Ik zeg hier ook maar een keer: Junya Watanabe's 2012 excentrieke lente/zomercollectie is een vriendelijke blik in de nabije toekomst.
